Requirements:
Goal: Acquiring basic knowledge of audio and video signals, television standards and functioning principles of television technology.
Outcome: Training students for the use of television and telecommunication devices for video and audio processing and transmission.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Historical development of television. Principles of the generation, transmission and reproduction of television image.
  2. Light and visual system.
  3. Basic principles of colorimetry.
  4. Analysis of TV image. Methods of image analysis. Semiconductor image sensors.
  5. Video signal characteristics. Component and composite video signals. Forming video signals.
  6. Digitization of video signals. Standards for digitization of video and audio signals.
  7. Audio and video signal compression: JPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21. Standards for audio and video signal compression.
  8. Physical interfaces and cables in television systems.
  9. Function and role of individual devices in TV systems. Synchronizing television devices. Timing.
  10. Automatic TV broadcast systems. Standards for broadcasting TV signals (SD, HD, UHD).
  11. Modulation of analog and digital signals in television.
  12. Broadcasting of television signal on different platforms (terrestrial, satellite, cable, internet).
  13. Reception of television signals from different platforms (terrestrial, satellite, cable, internet).
  14. Measurement and analysis of reception signals from different platforms.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Laboratory exercises follow theoretical instruction and are performed in groups of 10 students. There is a manual for performing laboratory exercises. The exercises carry out specific tasks from the manual.
