Requirements: Knowledge of basic electrical concepts enables successful monitoring of teaching.
Goal: Introduction to basic concepts and importance of renewable energy.
Outcome: Students will be able to participate in projects and assess the potential use of renewable energy sources.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Basic concepts of renewable energy sources. The importance of using renewable sources and distributed energy sources. The concept of distributed production.
  2. Solar energy. Basic methods of using solar energy. Spectrum of solar radiation. Characteristic sizes that describing the Sun's radiation.
  3. The mechanism of the conversion of solar radiation into electric and thermal energy. The term of insolation of the solar radiation. Diffusion, reflected and direct component of the Sun's radiation.
  4. The use of solar collectors in the conversion of solar energy into thermal energy.
  5. The photovoltaic conversion. Basic types of photovoltaic cells and materials.
  6. Photovoltaic systems and connection to the electricity distribution network. Selection of photovoltaic system elements.
  7. The concept of wind power. Types of winds. Power and height profile of wind speed.
  8. Metrological measurements and estimates of wind power potential. Wind atlas.
  9. Types of wind turbines. Power, moment and power of a wind turbine. Characteristic of wind turbine power.
  10. Selection of location for construction of wind farm.
  11. Choice of wind turbine type and wind turbine position. Selection of elements of wind farms.
  12. Integration of wind power plants into power system. Balance analysis of wind power.
  13. Calculations of annual production of wind power plants. Positive and negative impacts of wind farms on the environment.
  14. Modern wind generators.
  15. Colloquium.
