Requirements:
Goal: Gaining knowledge about signals in communication systems, signal characteristics that are of interest for communication systems as well as signal processing methods. Acquiring fundamental knowledge about communication systems.
Outcome: Upon completion of this course, participants will obtain basic knowledge about signals in telecommunications that will be useful in further study of signals and systems, basic knowledge about telecommunication signal processing methods, as well as foundation knowledge for studding signal processing in specialized systems such as mobile telecommunications and digital television.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introductory lecture (course organisation and syllabus). Basic terminology (signals and systems)
  2. Human perception of audio and video signals.
  3. Digitization of text. Digitization of audio signals. Audio formats.
  4. Digitization of images and video signals. Video formats.
  5. Spectral analysis of signals. Fourier series, Fourier transform. Spectrum analyzer and their applications.
  6. Telecommunication system model: transmitters, receivers, transmission mediums.
  7. Telecommunications transmission channels (copper wires, fiber, wireless transmission).
  8. Random noise.
  9. Extracting usfull signal in systems with transsmission impairments. System performance qriteria and fudamental limits.
  10. Multiplexing (TDM,FDM,CDM,OFDM).
  11. Basic elements of communication networks.
  12. Types of communication networks.
  13. Access networks and their services.
  14. Radio communication systems.
  15. Concluding remarks. Course evaluation.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Practical instruction complies with the topics in theoretical instruction. Students learn about basic signal characteristics and signal processing methods through examples implemented using Matlab and Python. Practical training also includes basics of oscilloscope and spectrum analyser use.
